It’s official! Benahavís, is the most expensive place to buy luxury real estate in Spain

Benahavis Casa Orquidea

The Costa del Sol has once again been reconfirmed as the jewel in the crown for luxury property sales in Spain. According to a recent report by Idealista.com, the Golden Triangle (comprising three of the most popular towns on the Coast; Benahavís, Marbella and Estepona), has once again been identified as the region with the most expensive homes for sale in Spain.

Out of the three towns, Benahavís (positioned 10 minutes inland between Estepona and Marbella) was singled out for the accolade of having the most expensive street – El Coto La Zagaleta – on the Spanish Peninsula! The average price for each of these La Zagaleta villas for sale stands at 7,043,750€.

Idealista’s ranking is based on an average of all types of properties (apartments, townhouses and villas) advertised on the same street, using only streets with at least 10 listings, therefore more expensive individual property prices may not be included in the calculation.

Why Benahavís is a property investors’ paradise

As a Ryan Serhant pro-member with experience of listing luxury homes for sale in Southern Spain, MDR Luxury Homes founder, Myriam De Roye, explained why Benahavís was listed as the number one property hotspot in 2022, “This small municipality (150kms with a population of 7,100) often ranks high in the national property listings, as it has a reputation for high-end luxury real estate, both in the village and on the outskirts. There is also a limited number of stunning million-dollar mansions and luxury estates situated within the exclusive enclave of La Zagaleta, which is part of Benahavís.”

About La Zagaleta, Benahavís

It is no exaggeration to say that La Zagaleta is Europe’s most exclusive and private Country Club and Resort. This mountainside retreat was a former hunting estate owned by Saudi Arabian businessman Adnan Khashoggi which spans over 900 hectares of forests, mountains and ravines, offering the most extraordinary views and closeness to nature. The development comprises large private estates and luxury mansions enjoying complete security and privacy from prying eyes.

Residents include some of the world’s most influential and wealthy individuals who enjoy the benefits of two private courses and club houses, an equestrian centre and restaurants, all protected by a private security force.

Benahavís real estate

Of course, Benahavís is so much more than La Zagaleta, in addition there is a perfectly preserved bustling hillside village with bags of Andalusian character, where winding pedestrian streets are lined with whitewashed townhouses and villas with bright flowers adorning every available wall. On the outskirts of the village, you’ll find a limited number of high-end new developments in Benahavís, such as these key-ready 2 and 3-bedroom Riverside Homes, alongside luxury villas.

Perfectly positioned

One of the many attractions of Benahavís is its superb location. As touched upon previously, the village is just a short drive inland from the glorious beaches and bustling coastal towns of Estepona to the west and San Pedro de Alcantara, Puerto Banús and Marbella to the East. Gibraltar and Malaga airports can be reached in approximately 50 minutes by car and the neighbouring towns’ facilities can be easily accessed via excellent transport links.

As expected with such an affluent community, there is a wide array of high-quality amenities, including easy access to international schools, medical facilities, shopping (local supermarkets, commercial centres and the designer boutiques of Marbella and Puerto Banús). If you fancy outdoor activities, the surrounding countryside is ideal for horse riding, hiking, cycling, kayaking, water sports and canyoning, in fact anything you care to try your hand at. Alternatively, head down to the beach for sailing, water sports, sunbathing or chilling out at a chiringuito or beach club.

There is also a thriving artistic element to the village, offering the opportunity to browse galleries to pick up some original artworks.

Benahavís is also surrounded by some extremely prestigious and well-established golf resorts, including the aforementioned La Zagaleta, the Villa Padierna 5-Star hotel and golf resort (as visited by Michelle Obama), Los Arqueros and La Quinta.

Dining room of Andalucia

If you enjoy dining out, Benahavís is the perfect destination. The village is bursting with a high concentration of restaurants, of all types. The choice of high-quality eateries is overwhelming for such a small village, ranging from fine dining to tapas, leading to the village being affectionately known as the ‘dining room of Andalucia’. One notable establishment is beautifully atmospheric Amanhavís Hotel and Restaurant and the much-loved local favourite Los Abanicos, where you’ll marvel at the size of the portions and quality of the food.

To cut a long story short, what Benahavís lacks in size it makes up for in quality and character, it is the perfect place to enjoy the best aspects of the Andalusian luxury lifestyle.
