Manilva is the most westerly municipality in Malaga, just a stone’s throw from the neighbouring province of Cadiz. This relatively known area is probably one of the few areas on the Costa del Sol which is still typically Spanish, with seemingly no influence from foreign residents. There are three main areas, Manilva Pueblo (the inland town), San Luis de Sabinillas and La Duquesa. But let’s start with the areas beautiful yacht marina, Puerto Duquesa.
La Duquesa is often referred to as one of the ‘Costa del Sol’s best kept secrets’. Known for its lovely yacht marina, Puerto Duquesa, the area has a distinctly international flavour. It is popular with many different nationalities, particularly Irish, British and Scandinavian visitors.
Although relatively quiet out of season, the marina is alive both day and night. All sorts of activities can be enjoyed from sailing, fishing and even dolphin spotting or you can sample the menu at a choice of fantastic restaurants offering every type of international cuisine.
Property stock in the area is a combination of apartments, townhouses and luxury villas with private grounds and swimming pools. As expected in an area renowned for golf, many of the luxury homes for sale occupy prime locations surrounded by golf courses.
San Luis de Sabinillas
San Luis de Sabinillas, just a few kilometres to the west of Puerto Duquesa, is a typical fishing village which has naturally expanded into a thriving town. Since the 1980s it has been become popular with international residents who work in Gibraltar and the infrastructure has grown accordingly. There most recent developments are the beachside urbanisations and the creation of a beautiful seafront paseo, followed by beachside cafes and bars. Head just one street back from the paseo and you’ll see a typically Spanish town, completely untouched by tourism.
Similar to Sabinillas, Manilva is a small mountain town located around 3 kilometres inland. The residents are mainly Spanish residents. The town has a bustling commercial area where most of the apartments are situated. There is everything you need, shops, bars, restaurants and easy access to golf courses and the beach within just a few minutes’ drive.
Family friendly beaches
Let’s not forget the beautiful golden sandy blue flag beaches, such as Playa Sabinillas. Spanning eight kilometres, the beaches are very family friendly, perfect for sunbathing and water sports. They are also relatively uncrowded, even during high season. There are even old fishing boats converted into barbeques that can be booked via the local the council.
The Magic of Manilva : things to see
Of course, the southern coast of Spain is a treasure chest of historical sites and Manilva is no different. Close to the town you’ll find the ancient Roman Sulphur baths and Aqueduct. There is something for wine buffs too. There is an established vineyard providing the Moscatel grapes used in the production of the eponymous sweet wine associated with the region. Also, adjacent to Manilva, you’ll find the impossibly pretty hillside village of Casares, the birthplace of the father of Andalucia ‘Blas Infante’.
Conveniently close to Gibraltar
Manilva is just 30 minutes’ drive from Gibraltar. It offers the best of both worlds, allowing those who want to own a luxury home in Spain whilst providing easy access to the ‘frontier’ for those who need to travel to Gibraltar regularly, to conduct business or use the international airport.
