Spain on 1 for digital nomads: discover why the Costa del Sol could be your new home
More and more people are leaving the classic 9-to-5 life behind. They are opting for freedom, flexibility and a different way of living and working. Digital nomads – from independent entrepreneurs to remote workers – are looking for places where they can live on their terms.
And Spain is number one. Literally.
According to a March 2025 international ranking, Spain has been named the best country in the world for digital nomads for the second year in a row.
And if you look at the combination of sun, infrastructure, culture, health, safety and affordability, the Costa del Sol is perhaps the most attractive region of all.
Why the Costa del Sol is a digital nomad’s paradise
With cities like Málaga, Marbella, Estepona and Benalmádena, this region has everything for those who want to live and work in a place where every day feels like a vacation.
We list its main strengths:
1. A climate that increases your productivity and quality of life
With more than 300 days of sunshine a year, mild winters and a lifestyle that revolves around being outdoors, healthy eating and relaxation, the Costa del Sol is a dream place to live. You start your day with coffee on your terrace, take a dip in the pool between meetings, and end your working day with a walk along the sea.
And the best part? That’s just normal here.
2. High-speed Internet connections and top-level coworking
The region is investing heavily in digital infrastructure. Whether you need to make a Zoom call, edit content or manage a team from abroad: everything works.
There are also numerous coworking spaces, often with inspiring design and community events. Some recommendations:
The Pool Marbella – with high-end finishes, fitness and business lounge
Innovation Campus Málaga – ideal for tech profiles and start-ups
Our Space in Nueva Andalucía – Stylish coworking with stunning views
Some real estate projects even integrate co-working spaces into the residential concept. Consider Aruna Cabopino, an exclusive eco-project with only 12 apartments that offers a shared workspace, in addition to a gym and wellness facilities. Or Pinares Hills in Málaga East, with modern apartments and coworking lounge included.
3. An international community of like-minded people
You are not alone here. The Costa del Sol is home to thousands of other digital nomads, entrepreneurs and remote families from all over Europe, Canada and the US. There are networking events, international schools, language exchanges and entrepreneurial groups – all accessible and open.
You quickly build a social network, which is essential when moving abroad.
The digital nomad visa: what you need to know
Since 2023, Spain has had an official digital nomad visa. And that makes it much easier for non-EU citizens to live and work legally in Spain.
Below is a summary of the most important info (2025):
Who is eligible?
You are a non-EU citizen
You work remotely for a non-Spanish company or have international clients as a self-employed person
Max. 20% of your income may come from Spanish clients
You have at least 3 years of relevant work experience or a higher degree
You earn at least €2,600/month (about double the Spanish minimum wage)
What are the benefits?
Visa is valid for 1 year, renewable for up to 5 years
You may bring your partner and children
You get access to the 24% fixed tax scheme (see below)
Opportunity to become a tax resident under favorable conditions
How do you apply for it?
You submit your application through the Spanish embassy or consulate in your home country, or through a lawyer in Spain if you are already in the country. You will need:
Proof of work/assignments
Diploma or professional experience
Sufficient income
International health insurance
No criminal record
A good real estate agent works with specialists who can guide you through this process. MDR Luxury Homes will put you in touch with licensed attorneys who will take care of all the paperwork for you.
Tax benefits for digital nomads in Spain
One of the main reasons why Spain is so attractive to digital nomads is its tax advantages.
Those who have a digital nomad visa and opt for the “Beckham Law” (officially: Régimen Fiscal de Impatriados), enjoy a flat tax rate of 24% on your worldwide income up to €600,000.
Above that, the normal Spanish progressive rate applies.
-> Compare that to some countries where you pay 40% or more.
In addition:
Spain has double tax treaties with more than 90 countries, which prevents you from being taxed twice
You contribute to Spanish social security only if you work in Spain for a company or register yourself as self-employed
You can also often take your existing social security contributions with you through European treaties
Do you always need a visa?
No, definitely not. If you are Belgian or Dutch, you do not need the digital nomad visa.
EU citizens are free to live and work in Spain as long as they register as residents. In practice, that means:
Apply for NIE number (identification number for foreigners)
Registering with the municipality
Possibly transfer your tax residency (if applicable)
In addition, there are many entrepreneurs, business leaders and investors who are perfectly capable of working from Spain without specific visa procedures.
MDR Luxury Homes works with independents, investors and business leaders who remain remotely active in their home countries, but do adapt their lifestyles to the Southern Spanish rhythm.
Investing smartly as a digital nomad: building for the future
Buying a property on the Costa del Sol is not only a lifestyle decision, but often a financially wise move.
– You build wealth instead of paying rent
– You have a safe and comfortable base of operations in southern Europe
– You can rent out the home during periods when you are traveling yourself
– You combine living, working, investing and relaxing in one location
MDR Luxury Homes will personally guide you in finding new construction projects, resales or exclusive homes that perfectly fit your remote lifestyle.
